I remember trying to skip rocks across a lake when I was little… I would search annnnnnd search for the perfect flat-ish rock. I would take a couple practice swings - and let go of it. Nine times out of ten, it would sink like a… Well, like a rock.
I would watch the ripples expand and wonder if there were people standing on the other side of the lake whose shoes were dampened by the ripples I started with my skipping attempts. I was so busy watching the ripples expand, that I had forgotten where I threw the initial rock in the first place. I forgot where it all began…
I think people should lead lives like that. In my crazy little metaphor - I believe people need to be like the rock. We need to make an influence and quietly, stoically sink to the bottom… Knowing that the influence we make on others will not stop… Whether it was a good or bad influence.
People need to be able to make a difference and not wave their arms around saying “Look at me! Look at how great I am!” The people who have made the biggest influence on my life aren’t people who are paid millions - but they’re people who sure as hell DESERVE millions. They’re people who do not realize how absolutely great they are or how much of an influence they make.
They don’t realize the lessons people have learned from them. How different lives would have been without them. They don’t realize how great of a void they’ll leave but also how much comfort from memories involving them will bring when they’re gone.
The greatest, yet cruelest, paradox is that great people don’t realize how great they are. Celebrities are well aware of their fan base… The normal people you see or interact with or work with have no clue just how many people they’ve influenced.they have no clue how many people admire them.
The normal people who share life, love and loss stories with you - are like the rocks I used to throw in the lake. They’re the people who started it all. But they’re also the first to fade away.
Cherish that person in your life. I’m lucky to have a handful of people like that in mine.
